How do I repack my Anthros for a return?

Step-by-step packing for the base box and the chair body box

This article includes two video walkthroughs: packing the base (1:56) and packing the chair body (5:16).

Quick answer

Pack the base and the chair body in their original boxes. Lower the cylinder all the way and seat the casters in the five holes in the base box. For the chair body, bring the upper back all the way forward and the lower back all the way back so it fits, bag it, set it into its nest, add the seat-cushion foam, then fold the upper back into its cardboard cassette and close up the box.

Part 1: Pack the base

  1. Lower the cylinder all the way: press down on the button at the top of the cylinder (stepping on it works), then move your foot away quickly so it stays down.

  2. Put the base back in its bag.

  3. Turn the casters into position and line them up with the five holes in the bottom of the box.

  4. Slide the top insert in. It only goes one way: the cutout lines up with the box handles.

Part 2: Pack the chair body

  1. Lay out the packaging pieces: foams, the upper back cassette, the tool and handle pieces, the spine insert, and the large bag. The handles don't come off, so they don't need to go back in the package.

  2. Make sure the inserts are in the right spots. Each is a unique size, and the tallest is where the spine goes.

  3. Turn the upper back control until the upper back is all the way forward, and turn the lower back control until it's all the way back. Otherwise the chair won't fit.

  4. With the chair upside down, pull the bag over the front, tuck it over the spine, and tuck it under the lower back.

  5. Lower the arms all the way, then set the chair into its nest with the spine going into its hole.

  6. Tuck the two foam pieces over the seat cushion and under the back to protect the fabric.

  7. Fold the upper back cassette: set the upper back into its spot, fold the two sides up into their slots, and place it with the notch facing the front. If it doesn't fit, check that the lower back is turned all the way back.

  8. Add the top piece, set the instruction cards on top, then close and tape the box.

Next, we've got to get this ready to go into that box. The cylinder, as I told you, is raised up so you can come down here and work on it easily. It's in a great position to work on, but it won't fit in the box. It has to go down all the way. So I carefully just step on it. This little button right here, when you push it, is what happens when you turn the control: it pushes this button down, and that's how the cylinder goes up and down. I just step on it until it goes all the way down. And now you need to quickly remove your foot so that it stays down. If you tap it just a little bit, it comes back up. So push it down, nice and easy, move your foot. Voila.

Next, we're going to get this out of the way and then tackle that. We're going to come over to our upper box. We've got a bag. I'm going to put this back into the bag. Come on over here again, and we're going to open it up. I'd like you to see into the bottom. There are five holes for the five casters. I just put it in there and line them up. Go down here, turn your casters into position, and then they go back down into the holes. This one's done.

Now this. Which way does it go in? Well, it only goes one way, but the cheat sheet is right here. Where the handles are on the box is where there's a cutout right here, and it just slides in and goes down. And then we're done with this one.

Okay, there are a few more packaging parts in here. I'm just going to lay them out, and then we'll grab them one by one as we need them. We'll set our foams right there. This is for the upper back. And we've got our stuff for our tools and the handles. Oh, wait a minute. The handles. Guess what? They don't come off, so don't worry about putting them back in the package. It's a one-way show. We've got the part that goes on the upper, the spine, and then we've got our big bag.

Before we put it in the bag, come on over here. These need to be in the right spot. If they got mixed up when you took it apart and you're wondering where they go, the good news is each one has a unique size, so it should show you where they go. You want to make sure they're in those spots. The trick is, this is the back. The tallest one is where your spine goes, and you can see where it was riding on here.

Now, before you put it back in, I need you to do one last thing: get these two backs in the right position to ship. If you have the upper back like this and you put it in the box, it won't fit. So we've got to bring the upper back all the way forward. I take this control and turn it until it goes all the way forward, all the way until it stops. That makes the chair as small as possible. Now we're going to do the opposite with the lower back. To make room for the packaging, I'm going to turn this one all the way back until it stops. Now it's ready to go in the box.

It's upside down, so I think this is the right time to put the bag on. Put it over the front. There we go. Lift it up, grab the rest of the bag, and tuck it in. Bring it over the spine, and we usually tuck it under the lower back. Okay, it's ready to go in the box. Before I pick it up, I'm going to pay attention to where that spine goes. I put it down into the hole. Lift it up, bring it over here, and just put it right down into its nest. There we go. Push it down. Oops, arms all the way down. I forgot that.

Okay. Now we need to protect the seat cushion from the cardboard. We don't want to damage it while it's in transit. So we put these two pieces of foam down and tuck them in underneath the back. There you go. Now we're protecting the textile, and it's time to put this big box in. We're done with the tools. One, two, give it a fold or two, and put it down in the box.

Next, the upper back goes into this scary, origami-looking thing. How does this thing go together? It's actually pretty easy. Don't be afraid. It just unfolds and refolds. Just to show you, I'll lay it out. It looks like this. If you grab it lightly, see these two slots right here? This one goes up and rests right there in the slot, and this one does the same. It just curls up and goes into the slot, except we need to put this in there first. So the upper back rests right here in its little hole. And there you go.

We pick this up, and it goes in a certain way. If you look right here, see this little notch? This goes towards the front. See this handle right here? It goes down just like that, and it stays in this big open area. And that's why, if this doesn't fit, you might have forgotten to turn the lower back all the way back. If this is hitting the chair, just reach down in here and turn that lower back all the way back, and it makes room for this box.

And then last is this piece. It goes on top right here, and it's off-center. Which way does it go? This way. Okay. And that's how you do that. The instruction cards you can just set on top. You can put all the instructions and sheets right on top, and now it's time to close it up, tape it up, and send it on its way.
