How do I unbox and assemble my Anthros?

Step-by-step unboxing and assembly: base, control knobs, upper back, and cuff

This article includes a 4:30 video walkthrough.

Quick answer

Assembly takes a few minutes and only needs the Allen tool and nut driver included in the box. You'll attach the base, lock the tilt, install the two rear control knobs, bolt on the upper back, and snap on the cuff.

Step by step

  1. Unpack. Remove the top insert, then the base (wheels and cylinder already installed). In the large box, the cassette on top holds the upper back and tool kit. Remove the hold-down insert and the two foam pieces protecting the seat cushion, then lift the chair out.

  2. Check your parts. Chair body, upper back, two control knobs, one bolt with nut, and the tool kit.

  3. Attach the base. Flip the chair upside down. The top of the base is keyed to the opening under the seat. Line it up, press it in, remove the blue tape, and flip the chair upright.

  4. Lock the tilt. Turn the tilt-lock knob a quarter turn clockwise so the chair won't tip back the first time you sit in it.

  5. Install the rear control knobs. Press each knob onto its hex shaft and turn it lightly until it keys in, then push it fully on.

  6. Attach the upper back. Push down on the upper back until the two parts touch so the holes line up. Wiggle the upper back slightly to start the bolt, then use the Allen tool to push the bolt through until it stops. Hold the nut in the nut driver, place it on the bolt, and tighten until snug. The upper back should still pivot and rebound. If it doesn't, back the nut off slightly.

  7. Snap on the cuff. Pull the upper back rearward for clearance, slide the cuff's tongue down into its slot, then press both sides until they click.

First piece is just an insert that sits over the top. Next, it's your base with the wheels on it and the cylinder on it, ready to go. Next, the big guy. First, there's this nice cassette up top, and this one right here holds your upper back and your tool kit. It's kind of like an origami puzzle. You open it up and there are your parts. There's your upper back, and here is your tool kit. Next, there's an insert that holds the chair down in the box, two pieces of foam that help protect your seat cushion, and then it's just a chair. We're just going to lift it out.

Here it all is. Come take a look. We've got the whole upper part of the chair, the lower part, two control knobs, and one bolt that we have to put in. This is pretty easy, guys.

So number one, I made sure that I had all of the components here. Number two says to flip the chair upside down, and we're going to put the base on. Look at this unique-looking hole right here. When you pick up the base, you're going to see a unique-looking part that goes onto here. As you can see, this is keyed to here. We stick it in place. Time to flip the chair over. Next, we're going to take this blue tape off. Next, we flip the chair over.

Number five says that we have to make sure that the chair is locked. Make sure that this knob turns a quarter turn left and right. Just turn it clockwise. Now it's in the locked position, and the chair won't tip backwards the first time you sit in it.

Okay. Number six, we're going to install the rear control knobs. You come down here, you put them on, and you lightly turn them until they key. See, as I move it in, it keys in, and then you give it a little push. Next, you can see it right here. It's a little hex. This goes in and lines up. Now they're on, and they won't come off.

Next, we're going to put the upper back on. Some people have a little hard time getting the bolt started. I hold it in my left hand and just let this fall into the hole. See the spacing right here? That's too far away. The holes aren't lined up. If you just push down on this back until these two parts right here are touching, that's pretty close to where the hole is. And then I just wiggle the upper back a little bit, and there it is. It's starting, and it will go across like that. Push it in until I can't, and then I grab my Allen tool, and I push it through until it's tight. Right there. It stopped. Now I know it's all the way in.

And then I can put the Allen tool on this side. I put the nut into the nut driver. Trying to put your fingers in here with a nut in your hand is not going to happen. So just hold this here. Trust yourself. Use gravity. Stick it in the hole. There you go. Go all the way in until it stops. Right about there. Make sure it's wobbling. Feels like I went a little too hard. It's not rebounding the way it should, so maybe a little turn backwards. Maybe a little more. Right about there. That feels great.

Okay. Now it's time to put the cuff on. See this little tongue? This thing right here goes down into that slot. That's the first step. I always pull the back here so that these little pins on the bottom have a little more freedom to come up here. If you're pushing it forwards, you can see the pins won't come up. So I just pull it back, get some extra room in there, I lift it up, and I just push this into that slot. It goes down. I know it's in the slot, and you just push. One, two. Done. It's that easy.
