How do I remove or install the seat cushion?

Two front screws and four back hooks. Removing and installing with the chair on its back

This article includes a 2:28 video walkthrough.

Quick answer

The seat cushion is held by two black screws at the front and four hooks at the back. Laying the chair on its back makes it easiest. Remove the two screws with the Allen tool, slide the cushion forward and lift to unhook it. To install, set it about an inch forward of the back, press down to catch the hooks, push it forward, line up the brass holes, and replace the screws.

Step by step

  1. Tip the chair onto its back.

  2. Find the two black screws at the front underside of the seat. Loosen them with the short end of the Allen tool (they're tight), then switch to the long end to remove them.

  3. Slide the cushion forward, lift slightly, and pull it toward you to release the four tabs from the hooks at the back.

  4. To install, set the new cushion about an inch forward of its final position, press down to catch the four hooks, then push the cushion forward.

  5. Check that the two brass holes line up, then put the screws back in.

Hi, guys. Today we're going to be taking the cushion off and putting it back on, and there are a couple of ways to do it. You can do it with the chair in an upright position, get on your back, and go underneath to take it off. I actually find it's a lot easier to put the chair on its back and work with it that way. So I'm going to tip it backwards and lay it down.

Now, if you come around to this side, you can see two black screws, one here and one here. These are the only two things that hold the cushion on. You take your Allen tool, because these are put on pretty tight to hold your seat in place, and I use this end first. I come in here and just loosen it up a little bit. Get one over there so you have a little more leverage. If it's tight, maybe do a couple until it feels a little looser, like this one. There we go. Now I switch to the other end. See that? There's that bolt. There's one. Here's the other.

Now, how it works is that the two bolts hold the front down, but it's clipped into the back. There's a slot back here, and the cushion tongues into it and that holds it down, and then the two screws hold it on at the front. So you slide it forwards, lift up just a little bit, and pull it towards you. There you go. It comes out of the grooves. And these are the tabs. Here's one, here's one, here's one, here's one. These are the four. And if you come over here, there are the hooks.

So how does it go back on? Now I have my new cushion, and it's time to put it on. I put it on the back first, and I get it about an inch forward. See that? I put a little pressure down here, and you'll feel those hooks. Trust me. Listen. See? I'll do it again. It's in the hooks. And now I come to the front and just push it down and forwards. Give it a little tap. And if you come around here, we want to make sure we can see the little brass holes. Are they lined up? Yep. I can see one there and one there. And then you just simply put the screws back in. That's it.
